Understanding Verification

What Is ITR Verification and Why Is It Mandatory?

ITR verification is the process of authenticating your filed income tax return to confirm that it was filed by you (the taxpayer) and not by a fraudulent third party. After you e-file your ITR on the Income Tax portal, the system generates an acknowledgment (ITR-V) that must be verified within 30 days of filing.

Until you verify, the return is in a "pending verification" status. The Income Tax Department will not process an unverified return — meaning no refund, no carry-forward of losses, and the return is legally treated as not filed at all. This can lead to notices for non-filing, interest charges, and penalties.

The Income Tax Department offers five verification methods: (1) Aadhaar OTP (instant), (2) EVC via net banking, (3) EVC via demat account, (4) EVC via bank account validation, and (5) Physical ITR-V (signed and posted). The fastest and most convenient method is Aadhaar OTP, which completes verification instantly if your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar.

Taxvio, based in Khatauli (Muzaffarnagar, UP), provides complete ITR verification assistance — from choosing the right method and troubleshooting errors (invalid EVC, mobile not linked, Aadhaar mismatch) to physical ITR-V preparation and dispatch — across Uttar Pradesh and pan-India.

All Methods Explained

5 Methods to Verify Your Income Tax Return

The Income Tax Department provides multiple verification options to suit different taxpayer preferences and technical capabilities. Here's a complete breakdown of each method.

How It Works

📮

Method 5: Physical ITR-V (Speed Post)

Traditional method — sign and post ITR-V to CPC Bangalore

How It Works

  1. After filing ITR, download ITR-V acknowledgment from the e-filing portal
  2. Print the ITR-V on A4 size paper (single-sided, no colour required)
  3. Sign the ITR-V in blue ink at the designated space
  4. Send the signed ITR-V to:
    Income Tax Department – CPC
    Post Box No. 1,
    Electronic City Post Office,
    Bengaluru – 560100, Karnataka
  5. Send via Speed Post only (ordinary post may get lost)
  6. Ensure ITR-V reaches CPC Bangalore within 30 days of filing
  7. Track your speed post and keep the receipt for reference

✅ When to Use

  • • Aadhaar not linked or mobile not linked
  • • Net banking / demat not available
  • • EVC generation repeatedly failing
  • • Senior citizens unfamiliar with tech

⚠️ Important Notes

  • • Takes 7–15 days for processing
  • • Must reach CPC within 30 days of filing
  • • Use only Speed Post — traceable
  • • Do NOT send via courier or ordinary post
Critical Deadline

30-Day Verification Deadline & Consequences of Missing It

📅 The 30-Day Rule

ITR verification must be completed within 30 days from the date of filing (not from the acknowledgment generation date). The 30-day period is calculated from the date you receive the ITR acknowledgment number.

📌 Example:

ITR filed on: July 25, 2024
Verification deadline: August 24, 2024

If you file on the last date (July 31), your verification deadline is August 30 — giving you essentially one month after filing.

⚠️ What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

Return Deemed Invalid

The ITR is treated as never filed — legally you are a non-filer.

💸 No Refund Processing

Any refund due will NOT be processed — you lose your money.

🚫 No Loss Carry Forward

Business or capital losses cannot be carried forward to future years.

📨 Notice for Non-Filing

Department may issue notice under Section 142(1) for non-filing of return.

💰 Late Fee & Interest

If you file a belated return later, you'll pay late fee (₹5,000–₹10,000) and interest.

⚖️ Penalty Risk

Persistent non-filing can lead to penalty under Section 271F (₹5,000–₹10,000) or prosecution.

Error Resolution

Common ITR Verification Errors & Solutions

Verification failures are common due to technical issues, mismatched data, or incorrect procedures. Here's how to resolve the most frequent errors.

⚠️Aadhaar OTP Not Received+

🔍 Common Causes

  • Mobile number not linked to Aadhaar
  • Aadhaar not linked to PAN
  • Mobile network issue or DND activated
  • Incorrect mobile number registered with Aadhaar

✅ Solutions

  • Visit UIDAI website and update/verify mobile number linked to Aadhaar
  • Link Aadhaar to PAN via e-filing portal or NSDL website
  • Temporarily deactivate DND and retry
  • Use alternate verification method (EVC or physical ITR-V)
⚠️Invalid EVC Error+

🔍 Common Causes

  • EVC entered incorrectly (typo or copy-paste error)
  • EVC expired (valid for 72 hours only)
  • EVC generated for a different assessment year
  • Bank account not pre-validated on portal

✅ Solutions

  • Re-generate fresh EVC and carefully enter without spaces
  • Use EVC within 72 hours of generation
  • Ensure you select the correct AY when generating EVC
  • Pre-validate bank account and retry EVC generation
⚠️Aadhaar-PAN Mismatch+

🔍 Common Causes

  • Name on Aadhaar differs from name on PAN
  • Date of birth mismatch
  • Gender mismatch
  • Aadhaar seeding status 'F' (failed) in NSDL database

✅ Solutions

  • Correct Aadhaar or PAN name to match — visit respective offices
  • Update DOB/gender on PAN or Aadhaar to match
  • Check Aadhaar-PAN link status on e-filing portal or NSDL site
  • If all else fails, use physical ITR-V method
⚠️Net Banking EVC Not Generated+

🔍 Common Causes

  • Bank does not support EVC generation feature
  • PAN not linked to the bank account
  • Net banking not active or expired
  • Technical issue on bank's portal

✅ Solutions

  • Check bank's list of supported services — not all banks offer EVC
  • Update PAN in bank account via branch visit or online
  • Reactivate net banking or reset login credentials
  • Try alternate verification method
⚠️Physical ITR-V Not Processed+

🔍 Common Causes

  • ITR-V sent after 30-day deadline
  • Sent via courier/ordinary post instead of Speed Post
  • Incorrect CPC address used
  • ITR-V not signed or signed in black ink

✅ Solutions

  • Always send within 30 days — track dispatch date
  • Use ONLY India Post Speed Post — traceable
  • Double-check CPC Bangalore address before posting
  • Sign in BLUE ink only — black signatures may be rejected
⚠️Bank Account Pre-Validation Failed+

🔍 Common Causes

  • Incorrect bank account number or IFSC entered
  • Account holder name mismatch with PAN name
  • Account inactive or closed
  • Penny drop (₹1 validation deposit) failed

✅ Solutions

  • Verify account number and IFSC from bank statement
  • Ensure account holder name exactly matches PAN name
  • Use an active savings/current account
  • Contact bank if penny drop consistently fails

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — ITR Verification

Can I verify my ITR after 30 days?+
No. The 30-day deadline is absolute. If you miss it, the return becomes invalid and is treated as not filed. You will need to file a belated return (if before December 31 of AY) and verify that within 30 days. The original return cannot be verified after the deadline.
Which verification method is fastest?+
Aadhaar OTP is the fastest method — verification is completed instantly (within 2 minutes) if your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar and you receive the OTP successfully. EVC methods also work instantly once the code is generated. Physical ITR-V takes 7–15 days for processing.
Can I verify someone else's ITR (parent, spouse)?+
If you're using Aadhaar OTP, the OTP will be sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile of the person whose ITR is being verified — so they must be present or you must have access to their mobile. For EVC or physical ITR-V, you can assist them, but the verification must be done using their credentials/account/signature.
What if my Aadhaar is not linked to PAN?+
Aadhaar-PAN linking is mandatory since 2017. If not linked, your PAN may become inoperative. You cannot use Aadhaar OTP verification without linking. Link Aadhaar to PAN immediately via the e-filing portal (free) or NSDL website (₹1,000 fee for late linking). Use EVC or physical ITR-V in the meantime.
Do I need to verify a revised return again?+
Yes. Every time you file an ITR (original, revised, or belated), you must verify it within 30 days. Filing a revised return does not carry over the verification from the original return. Each filing requires separate verification.
How do I know if my physical ITR-V reached CPC Bangalore?+
Track your Speed Post using the tracking number on the India Post website. If delivered successfully, you'll see 'Delivered' status. Additionally, the e-filing portal will show 'ITR-V Posted' status initially, which changes to 'Verified' once CPC processes your physical ITR-V (takes 7–15 days).
Can I verify ITR using someone else's bank account EVC?+
No. The bank account used for EVC generation must be linked to your PAN. Using someone else's bank account will not work, as the system matches PAN with the account holder name during EVC generation and validation.
